The golden age of streaming initially promised a less expensive, and more convenient, alternative to traditional cable television. Instead of paying for numerous channels that one might never observe, viewers could subscribe to a single service, offering a wealth of content. However, the landscape has dramatically shifted. Now, numerous major streaming platforms exist; each boasting exclusive series, and films.
This proliferation of services presents a challenge. To access the full spectrum of desirable content, one is often compelled to subscribe to multiple platforms simultaneously. This can quickly negate the initial cost savings that streaming offered. According to a survey conducted by the research firm, J. Sitel Group, "thirty-two percent of respondents reported feeling overwhelmed by the number of subscription services they managed". The result can become an overwhelming, and expensive, tangle of monthly fees.
A practical approach involves strategic planning. Instead of maintaining continuous subscriptions to every service, consider a rotating system. This method is also supported by Deloitte's statement, which is featured in an article from, Adweek: "a large percentage of consumers canceled and resubscribed, or subscribed seasonally, to services, signaling viewers are savvy about rotating through, to get the content they want, when they want it."
Begin by identifying the programs that you most desire to watch, on each platform. Focus on one, or two, services at a time; based upon their exclusive content. Subscribe only to those services, during the period when you plan to watch that specific content.
Once you have viewed your desired programs, cancel those subscriptions, before the next billing cycle. Then, shift your focus to the next set of services, with content that appeals to you. This cyclical approach allows access to a wide range of shows, and films; without the constant financial burden of numerous concurrent subscriptions.
Another tactic is to take advantage of free trials, and promotional offers. Many services offer introductory periods, during which you can access content at no charge, or at a reduced rate. Be diligent, and record the end dates of these trials, to avoid unexpected charges, if you decide not to continue the subscription. Setting a reminder, on a calendar, or a digital assistant, can prove very helpful, in this regard.
Careful planning, and a willingness to rotate subscriptions, can transform the challenge of multiple streaming services; from a source of frustration, into a manageable, and more affordable, entertainment strategy. Through considered choices, you can experience the wide variety of content, that the streaming world offers; without exceeding your budget.
